Some backyards just don't get used the way they should. The yard is there, the view is there, but without a real outdoor space to anchor everything, it never quite comes together. That's exactly what we were dealing with on this one.
We built out a wide ground-level deck that now runs across the full back of the home. It connects the living space inside to the yard outside in a way that just makes sense. The pergola post structure we framed out gives the space definition without boxing it in - you still get the open sky and the surrounding tree line.
What we like about this kind of build is how much it changes the way a home feels from the outside. The back of the house went from a patch of grass to an actual living area. Furniture fits. People can spread out. The upper deck that was already there ties in naturally with the new lower level, so now there's a layered outdoor setup that works for everything from a quiet morning to a backyard full of people.
This falls squarely under exterior renovations - and it's one of those projects where the difference is hard to miss. A well-built deck isn't just about square footage. It's about how the space flows, how it holds up over time, and whether it actually fits the home it's attached to. We think about all of that before the first board goes down.
If your backyard has a lot of potential but nowhere to actually sit and enjoy it, a ground-level deck build might be the most straightforward fix there is.
